Patient Navigator
When a person is first diagnosed with cancer it can be an overwhelming and confusing time. It is difficult to know where to turn with family and friends making multiple suggestions. At HVHC's Cancer Center, a medical professional called a patient navigator will guide the patient step by step through the process explaining options and coordinating appointments and treatment.
Cancer Protocols Determine Treatment
Cancer Care has changed dramatically in recent years. It is no longer necessary to travel long distances to get the latest in cancer care. Cancer research has provided protocols for treatment so physicians follow the same guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network no matter where the patient is treated. Unless a patient has a rare form of cancer or needs to undergo experimental treatments, they can often receive care close to home.
Quality Physicians

This extraordinary program already has attracted nationally renowned physicians who see the Center as a forward thinking place to practice. These physicians include members of the Ashikari Breast Center, including Drs. Roy and Andrew Ashikari and Dr. Pond Kelemen. Their ties to research and past service to Memorial Sloan Kettering and Mount Sinai Medical Center have long positioned them as leaders in their field. Members of the New York Group for Plastic Surgery, Drs. C. Andrew Salzberg and R. Michael Koch – who specialize in microsurgery and breast reconstruction as well as the full range of cosmetic surgery – have joined with the Ashikari team for a full service, surgical program.
Also part of our Cancer Center Team are distinguished oncologists and radiation oncologists such as Dr. Asim Aijaz of Westchester Oncology and Hematology and Dr. Chika Madu of Hudson Valley Radiation Oncology Services. Consulting physicians such as oncologist Dr. Jeffrey Ambinder of Hudson Valley Hematology and Oncology Associates, add a level of expertise and familiarity with the community.

Different Treatments, One Center
The Comprehensive Cancer Center follows guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and practices evidence-based medicine to determine which combination and sequencing of the three major therapies — surgery, radiation and chemotherapy — is best suited for each patient’s unique circumstance. Those decisions are made in collaborative conferences called tumor board discussions, where every specialist who has or could have bearing on the patient’s case is involved.
Maintaining an ongoing conversation with the patient’s primary care provider is also greatly valued by the Center’s care team, not only to ensure the patient can easily access treatment for general concerns and conditions, but also to assist. the specialists in tailoring therapies based on the detailed information that can only come from a long-term medical relationship.
An Infusion Center

The Infusion Center, on the first floor, is designed to make the experience of receiving chemo-therapy as convenient and stress-free as possible. It is a convenient alternative to long drives to distant hospitals, particularly important for patients undergoing multiple treatments.
Patients can receive intravenous infusions, therapeutic injections, and wound care in a safe, professional, and comfortable environment. For more information on our infusion center, call 914-293-8412.
Women's Health, Radiation Oncology

A new Women's Health Center will provide all radiology and testing services. The center would work in conjunction with the Radiation Oncology Services including the latest in cancer treatment - Tomotherapy - a state-of-art radiation therapy that pinpoints cancer while sparing healthy tissue. The procedure has an integrated CT scan to assure the most accurate daily delivery of the treatment plan developed by the Radiation Oncologist.
HVHC is the only facility in the region to offer this treatment.
Support Services

In addition to curative and clinical services, patients and their families receive the emotional, financial and psychosocial support they need to achieve optimal results during cancer treatment. The center offers nutritional services and has future plans for a support group, boutique, as well as an organic garden which would be used for for nutritional education and therapeutic opportunities. The Ashikari Breast Center offers a monthly program for women undergoing cancer treatments called Look Good...Feel Better. The program, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, offers free wigs, make up tips and more.
